archeological sites

overview / intro
We spent a few weekends checking out the historic sites just outside the city limits (1-3 hours away from the center of Lima).
The first was Pachacamac to the south. It has been around for thousands of years, and has many different civilizations use it as a religious and commercial center on the coast. There is a very informative and modern museum there at the entrance. Then you can walk, bike, or drive a car to the rest of the locations on site. There are excavated and partially repaired temples, agricultural sites, meeting buildings, pyramids, walkways, and military style buildings.
The second location was in the north and is named Caral. It's believed to be the oldest built site in Peru and possibly all of the Americas at over 5000 years old. It has pyramids, houses, theater, and government buildings.
